2012 Lib Tech Travis Rice Pro Video Snowboard Review

If you know anything about Travis Rice you’ll know that he’s one of the most aggressive snowboarders on the planet; slaying everything from enormous backcountry kickers to the steepest Alaskan faces. So it would make sense if his signature board was an aggressive feestyle/freeride snowboard, wouldn’t it? Well that was my view before riding Travis’s board at this years’ board test.

At around 70kg (roughly 150lbs) and 5’ 9” tall I’m no Travis Rice in stature so I was expecting this board to be a difficult to control and tiring to ride. For this reason I decided to size-down to the 153 rather than riding the 157, which would have been my normal choice. Nevertheless sizing-down to the 153 turned-out to be an inspired choice and meant that the board was far more manageable and easy to ride.

Although this years’ board hasn’t had any changes made to it from last years model, except for the graphics, there seems very little point in changing a board this good. The T Rice is a lightweight versatile board that when sized-down can be ridden and jibbed all over the park and mountain. The 153 was a lot of fun all over the park, from kickers to the halfpipe and it even pressed fairly effortlessly on boxes and rails. The C2 Power Banana profile felt poppy at low and high speeds, lively in and out of turns with added torsional strength which makes the board feel deceptively stable underfoot and quick from edge to edge.

If you’re an average size and you’re looking for a capable park board that can handle the rest of the mountain then sizing-down a T Rice could definitely be an inspired choice. East Coast riders who ride icy parks can take full advantage of the Magnetraction and slightly firmer flex for icy halfpipes and firm landings. If you’re a West Coast park rider then you may want a board with a little more length for floating on those powder days. If you’re a larger, heavier rider and you want a board to slay the park then you’ll definitely be able to ride this board at a regular length.

So what if you’re focus isn’t on the park and you want an all-mountain board for cruising around groomers, hitting the occasional kicker and riding pow and variable snow in the backcountry? In that case there isn’t much point in sizing-down just be prepared to ride this board hard and fast.

Highlights:
Great grip from Magnetraction edges
Responsive and fast edge-to-edge
Versatile C2 Banana profile for true all-mountain riding

Letdowns:
No full-wrap edges
Only two lengths in Blunted shape

How does the the 157 ride in powder and can i use my Restricted Malavita bindings on it or do i need stiffer bindings?

Cheers :)

Review for Travis Rice 2012 Lib tech pro c2btx 161.5 I am six foot two,one hundred and ninety five pounds, size 11 boot. Took this board out for the first time in April spring conditions in South Lake Tahoe.Handles hard packed steep groomers with out any slide outs, super fast on those dreaded cat tracks,very responsive toe to heel side and visa versa, excellent pop or rebound into and out of turns, handles ski d out moguls like a hot knife through butter. Have burton P1.1 bindings on this board. Huge technological upgrade from a 164.5 Palmer honeycomb I have been riding for a few years. I don’t know why it took me so long to get this board but I am so happy I did. The first few turns were squirrelly due to the high tech underfoot but by the second run had this Ferrari screaming on edge to edge on double black diamonds and back wood bombs.

@STU BENNETT

I have the 157.  i personally prefer as stiff bindings as possible, but i believe the malavitas will do if you have some stiff boots. How it rides in POW depends on your weight and skill, but the rocker does the job - floats nicely. I’m 80kg at 180cm. will use my 161,5 for pow days though

Thanks Niklas, im the same stats as you so thats very helpful!

All I can say is this board is certified SICK, It has explosive pop, holds an edge tremendously well, grips down on ice, rides fast and charges hard. Id recommend the T rice pro for advanced riders looking for an all mountain machine. 7 stars out of 5. Get out and try it

Just bought a dark series, think I am going to send it back. Little on the narrow side. And maybe alittle more freeride oriented than I was looking for. Im looking for something abit more aggressive than my never summer sl.

My sl is a 158. So I would go for the 157 T.Rice. My only concern is how would it handle powder? I mainly ride a local hill 750FT vert. So there is no need for the 161.5

However I am going to ride some of the bigger mountains in BC this season. So am looking for something that handles the powder well.

Thoughts???

@MIKE P

ill give you my input on this. i find the 157 t.rice a bit short for POW days, but only because i like stomping clffs. it rides pow great, but due to its stiffness i would rather have to 161,5 for more stability in big landings. again it depends on your weight, height and skill (im 180cm at 80kg), but you could always go with the t.rice 157 or jones mountain twin for pow/playing around. for big mountain rinding and har charging, the jones flagship cannot fail you:) if you want to go with the wider lib-tecHs, i would still recommend the 161,5 for pow days if you match my weight and height…. if you’re freestyle oriented and ride switch a lot, choose the twin or t-rice. if you charge hard, go with the flagship or t rice 161,5. good luck mate, charge hard!
