The second year of Snowboard-Review.com testing the Scallywag and the second season we’ve raved about it. I’ll save the inevitable pirate speak for the review, needless to say the Scallywag is more fun than a week on a pirate ship with a lifetimes supply of rum. A must have for any freestyler!

Manufacturer's Description:

Shiver me timbers, a plank with pop!

Ay, the Scallywag gives shredders massive ollie pop, on account o’ the new Pop zones. Every sea dog worth his salt knows that ChillyDog with Pop is as stable and forgiving as a trusted ship during a storm and as tasty as the finest rums, while the Freebase is as slick as a freshly washed deck. Here’s proof that a rrrrrgggggghhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrrrad park board doesn’t have to drain the booty bin.

Forum Scallywag

SB-RV Review

The Forum Scallywag – where should I start ? Well I guess I should say that if you are looking for a board to have a little bit of fun on then this isn’t for you. And that if you are looking for fun most of the time, then maybe go elsewhere too. If, however, you are looking for a one-way ticket to Fun City, then this is the board for you!

Unsurprisingly the Scallywag features super cool, pirate-inspired graphics (everyone loves a pirate right?) which are even nicer than last year’s and looking down at this board whilst shredding just brings a huge smile to your face. It’s not about graphics right ? Well no, it isn’t, but I defy anyone to avoid grinning like a rum-riddled Jack Sparrow every time you strap this to your feet. Forum’s chili-dog camber is not exactly subtle but it is super fun and ridiculously easy to ride. Initially I was surprised that the Scallywag was actually slightly stiffer than the noodle that I had been led to believe it was, and was actually a far more refined snowboard, which I think people have been too quick to pigeon-hole. Sure, I wouldn’t really fancy booting off 20m kickers on this but the all round riding experience is very responsive and actually pretty stable at speed. Edge-to-edge was quick and the board possessed a nice snappy pop which popped me up on to the jibs, of course the place which the Scallywag can really calls home.

In one hour of riding a glacier jib line I seriously learnt four new tricks – and I don’t normally learn tricks quickly, if at all! So I guess, at heart, the Scallywag is indeed the jib board of choice that any pirate should plunder given half a chance. Any small hill jibber who doesn’t buy this board should be made to walk the plank, and any beginners who are looking for something mellow and fun to learn the ropes on could do far worse than the Scallywag. That’s not to say higher end riders can’t use this little treasure and I think instructors, intermediate cruisers and park rookies could really benefit from the Scallywag’s charms. The board is just stiff enough to deal with hard pistes and its ChillyDog rocker is great for learning presses and butters. I could go on and on about the Scallywag, but Pirates are supposed to keep their treasure for themselves. So go put your bandana on your head, stick a parrot on your shoulder and go plunder the Scallywag from your local store!  Aaaarrrrgghhh she’s a beauty me ol’ peg legged, rum riddled mucker!!

Hi Jay,

Stoked you found the site useful… you’ve bought yourself a great board. The Scallywag was one of the funnest boards I rode all of last season. Bindings wise, I’d check out the Union Contract and Forum Shaka bindings, designed spesifically for rocker boards. I’ve just bought a set of new Drake Supersports and they’re are the most comfortable and supportive set of bindings I have ever owned… can’t really recomment them enough.

How suitable would this board be for mountain riding? Looking to mess about on the mountain then head down to the park to hit some rails so must be able to cope reasonably well with all conditions?

Tim on August 28, 2011 at 03:35 AM

hey when people say this board is a 4/10 for flex what does that mean? Is the lower the number the softer it is to flex or harder it is to flex?

Richard Ewbank on August 28, 2011 at 07:38 AM

Yeah in most cases 1/10 is an absolute noodle and 10/10 is like riding reinforced concrete. Of course the flex ratings vary between vrands but with a 4/10 you can see that the Scallywag has a medium/soft flex.

Tim on August 28, 2011 at 03:53 PM

hey thanks for letting me know that’s what I thought it was but I just wanted th make sure it was and also is a 4/10 a good flex for me because I like popping on rails? also is a 4/10 have alot of flex that’s what I want and   how is this board compaird to the fourm youngblood tell the truth I don’t want to hate the board when I get it?

Tim on August 28, 2011 at 04:06 PM

hey out of the 2011 boards which one is the best for popping good and I ride more park but some times just mountin fourm scallywag, fourm youngblood or the fourm manual?

Rich Ewbank on August 28, 2011 at 05:55 PM

I’ve only ridden the Scallywag but yeah it’s got plenty of slow speed pop to get you up on rails. I can’t compare between the other Forum boards. To be honest their specs, profile and flex are pretty similar.

First…compliment for your site :-) Give me an advice about this board: I have find good deal for Forum Scallywag 158 2011, but i search a board a little stiffer respect 2010 scally or 2011 pbj (my last board tried). Infact i will want to use it for snowkite, and all over the mountain “normal” snowboard. Can you compare me scally 2011 flex respect the old 2010 model or 2011 DC PBJ flex? Regards Alberto

Rich Ewbank on October 03, 2011 at 05:59 PM

Hey Alberto, thanks for the compleiments. I think the Scallywag flex is pretty similar to the DC PBJ 2010/11… perhaps a little stiffer. Rich
