Prior Spearhead - 2010

/images/brands/prior/logo/prior_logo.gif

Named after a range of Mountains behind Whistler Blackcomb the Spearhead is a culmination of years of freeriding R&D. A tapered shape and rockered nose means that this board will glide effortlessly through deep snow but Prior assure us that the Spearhead is still quick from edge to edge and has plenty of grip on crud and hardpack.

Manufacturer's Description:

Part retro, part future, the Spearhead is a powder board evolution combining incredible floatation and stability. Big alpine bowls to tight treed sections, the Spearhead handles it all…and rips in the hard pack too. The Spearhead’s defined, rockered nose profile provides unparalleled powder trim and non-catch quickness edge-to-edge. Its modest sidecut, taper and stiffer tail give enhanced performance and drive. The Spearhead is named after the powder filled Spearhead range which sits just behind Blackcomb Mountain here in Whistler. We love riding there and much of the Spearhead R&D was done in its chutes.

Best for - All winter conditions. The Spearhead excels in powder of all descriptions and terrain ranging from wide open bowls to tight trees. In addition, it provides incredible performance in hardpack, crud, and variable snowpack.

Rider type - Big mountain freeriders that want an everyday board that excels in the powder yet performs everywhere.

What colour is powder?

What’s this thing like when you land switch? Looks like the stance is set well back.

Tom Ewbank on July 16, 2009 at 12:41 PM

Hey TF,

As with a lot of big-mountain freeride specific boards the stance has been set back and the tail is tapered which allows the board to float more easily in powder. Riding this board switch is probably possible, for a short while, but it’s been designed to go nose first down steep and deep terrain.

Hope that helps,

Tom

The Spearhead is definitely a board for big mountain riders more interested in slaying gnarly shoots, open bowls and deep trees than throwing down in the park. With a set back stance and a long reverse camber nose, landing switch in pow is probably not your best option with this board. With that said, what the Spearhead does, it does extremely well. In deep snow, the Spearhead provides a legendary surfy ride, and transitions powerfully in and out of turns whether you’re carving 30 meter long S turns through the high alpine or slashing through tight trees. I really can’t over emphasize the manouverability and edge to edge acceleration of this board. As a fairly small rider (5’9, 155lbs) I was a bit intimidated taking out a 166 (even though I’ve been riding for well over a decade), but within a few laps I was definitely convinced I had made the right decision.

While this board was definitely conceived for deep pow days, in my opinion it’s versatile enough to be your go to ride (if you’re consistently riding big terrain and aren’t partial to the park). It has enough stiffness throughout for good hold on hardpack, and busts through crud and slush pretty nicely. The tail is stiff enough for pretty decent pop, and surprisingly, the board rides well switch on the hardpack. Added bonus: Prior builds their boards to order, so you can pick you’re own topsheet and base from a number of wicked designs, or choose to go with traditional camber. The Spearhead is also built as a Splitboard, which is a pretty enticing option for those with thick wallets.

All in all, I was super impressed with this board (the first Prior offering I’d tried out) and as far as pow performance is concerned, would put it in the same category as heavy hitters like the Burton Fish and the Rossi Experience.
