Isn’t it ironic, that when you’ve got the money to pay for excess baggage to take all your snowboarding gear on holiday with you, you can afford a snowboard like the Burton Method. There are many boards out there claiming to be the lightest snowboard on the market, pick up a Burton Method and there will be no doubting that the board you are holding is the lightest on the planet. With Burton’s all new Flying-V profile, more bells and whistles than an apache helicopter and strangely named materials like Methodskin laminates and Methlon Sintered base, the Method is defining what is possible when it comes to space age design and lightweight construction.

Snowboard Review:

After all the hype, I wanted to see what the Method was all about and if it lived up to the £1,300 price tag! Yes in case you think your eyes fooled you, the cost of the Burton Method is a whopping £1,300! The Method is packed with a lot (or a little depending on the way you look at it) of goodness, when you pick it up you’ll be immediately amazed by how light it is. I tested a 158 which is on the bigger side for me, and it was still lighter than my mini 121cm, so you can imagine how light it actually is! Personally, I LOVE lightweight boards and they don’t come any lighter than this high-tech stick!

Luckily I got to test this Rolls Royce of a board on a bit of a powder day and I must say that I was impressed with how well it rode. Edge to edge was sharp, responsive and snappy which I expected but was reassured to find. I usually hate jumping around on any board longer than a 156 but because the Method so poppy thanks to it’s crazy Flying-V profile and is crazy lightweight thanks to it’s pioneering construction, it was almost like jumping with a skateboard attached to my feet. The base was insanely fast even in heavy spring powder and the Flying-V profile worked well in turns and jibbing about… no issues there.

Yeah I know it’s difficult to justify the hefty price tag but at the end of the day if you can afford it then why not?

If you want the best, the Method is it.

What colour is powder?

Anyone interested in the weight of this board, a 155 came in at 2.4kg and about 3.8 with Malavita bindings on. My old setup was a yes 2010 with salamon gift bindings came in at 5.8.

First thing I noticed about this board was the speed it’s definitely not a beginners board and could be quite dangerous in the wrong hands. Also on the first run I did a small ollie back onto the piste and absolutely flew. Guys with me commented that I was going big this year but actually I was just trying to do a small hop! Same goes for rollers which I flew off without planning to.

I was a bit worried about the edge hold after lots of people slated the flying v on the custom but it was fine on hardpack between moguls, never lost an edge. I did ride standard piste in pretty good conditions so I can’t say definitively if it would be a nightmare on hardpack though. The rocker did exactly what I wanted in the slush and off piste softish powder. Never a hint of the board digging in which always got me on my old straight camber board. Straight lining was an absolute joy as well. All in all a lot of fun, but quite dangerous. Not a hint of arm ache from carrying this board, could have walked miles :)

Flex was very different to my yes board. One of the reasons I wanted to change was the yes 156.5 was pretty stiff and I could barely bend it with the 59kg I weight. I was able to do manuals on the method though but other than that I didn’t really trick around much mainly due to how steep the resort was.

Top sheet has peeled off a bit at the edges quite a bit, not sure if it was a defect or just through normal wear and tear..

I own a 162 2010-11 Method and love it! I had read a lot of reviews on the Method prior to buying it and one thing that always seemed funny to me is that a lot of people described it as a board having similar properties to Clark Griswold’s Steel Saucer sled in the movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. You know, the movie where he puts the special lubricant on the bottom of the saucer, puts it on the ground….and as soon as he sits down on it, it immediately accelerates down the mountain at “Mach Speed” yielding him completely helpless and out of control(too funny). As I would not recommend this board to anyone still attempting to link turns, I see no reason why this is not a good board for a relatively new rider. This is my third season riding, I can ride(and thoroughly enjoy) most of the terrain on the mountains here in western Montana (with the exception of cliffs/60 degree slopes). In short, I’m a new rider that is picking it up pretty quick and have never ridden a board that felt more stable -and/or- has given me more of a sense of control than my Method. It is insanely responsive, It hoovers/maneuvers fantastically on powder(keeping in line with Clark Griswold, It magically floats 3 inches above the surface) it carves hard on groomers and holds well on the ice. I would recommend this board to anyone to anyone who is truly passionate about snowboarding (you have to be to justify the price).
