It’s a sad fact that in this day and age TV pundits without a clue about our sport continue to stick their ore in and make an arse of themselves. Our donkey of the month Christine Brennan has enraged the US snowboarding community with her recent comments in an interview regarding Kevin Pierces tragic accident in Park Utah.
Brennan kicks off the ABC News interview with the comment “This sport was added for TV Ratings”. When asked what the US and International Olympic committees should do to prevent injuries like this happening Christine announces that they should “immediately commission a group of medical experts and others to look into it”, very insightful. Others hey, maybe they could take the Village People along?
The Icing on the cake after a lot of babbling and general tripe, Christine drops a right clanger; “For example, one of the judged qualities of snowboarding and halfpipe is what we are talking about here is amplitude, so the very fact that you get more points the higher you go, it is asking these young fearless athletes to do things that probably aren’t best for them and where as in figure skating yes there have been injuries, bobsled, luge, hockey, skiing… Herman Mayer all of those things happen in these sports but it’s not at the speed, you’ve got ice, you’ve got snow and you’ve got youth and you’re putting that all together with the hope of winning Olympic gold”. Right so Ice skating, bobsled and downhill skiing don’t involve speed, snow or ice? I don’t want to sound like an idiot here but I think they do Christine.
Fortunately the web is an extremely easy place to vent your frustrations and some peeved riders have taken five minutes out of their busy lives to put together a Facebook page where you can watch the offending article and display your distaste. www.facebook.com
Like everyone involved in snowboarding the team at Snowboard Review are crossing everything we have for Kevin and hope he makes a full and swift recovery.
