Hey All,

Looking to buy ready for a possible end of season run to Austria or in prep for next year.  A bit about myself - I’m 6’2” (186cm), 86kg (190 lbs - 13.5 stone), Size 12 US (11 UK, 46 Euro). I ride on ave maybe 12 days a year.

Living in Holland, I usually only get to resort locations and so tend to ride the groomers and play as much in the edge of piste softies as possible. I have just returned from an awesome 10 days in Lake Tahoe, US where I discovered I really like the more challenging runs and steepies as well as finding myself getting back to some skateboarding routes riding off the kickers and catching a little air (to be improved on!) Now after returning I want to get prep’d for my next trip and invest in my own gear. People I ride with class me as advanced intermediate, but I definitely want to buy my own ride now and get to the next level.

A good friend recommended the Jeremy Jones flagship when he was back at Rossignol and I was hoping to give this a go in Tahoe, but alas this fell through. After reading your reviews and looking into it more I’m kind of torn between the Jones Flagship or Mountain Twin (perhaps a little more forgiving and a better developmental ride) or the Burton Custom (either X - again maybe a little unforgiving, or the straight custom - called Flying V?).

What do you guys reckon on my board selections here? Oh and what binding would you recommend. just about to buy the ThirtyTwo Ultralights as i was super impressed with the stiffness but yet still amazingly light.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Cheers…Chris

It sounds like you want to progress in “allmountain freeride”

In that case I would go for the twin.

You could also look at the K2 Turbo Dream.

I think that Twin / Turbo are nice picks in nice conditions. You would probably be better of with a magnetractionboard. I mean: if you go for trips you need something that can handle ice and that stuff well to. Finding nice conditions could be hard enough even if you happen to live in a skiiresort al the time.

Rossignol or LibTech has the magnetraction grip - nice when it´s not so nice.

From your size I would look to a 160 cm + board.

Yeah MP’s spot on here, the Flagship is a great board, but for all mountain riding it’s overkill. The firm flex and directional shape will restrict your riding to freeriding and big mountain. The Mountain Twin sounds like a better option and like MP says the 160 would be a good fit for your weight and boot size.

If you are riding a lot of powder then you’ll really benefit from the Camrock profile on the Mountain Twin. If you are more riding groomers and hard snow, you wont get more grip and edge hold than a Burton Custom X… except maybe an Amplid UNW8, but they’re a little narrow. In the Custom X you’d be looking at a 162W.

Bindings, I can’t fault Drake Supersports for all mountain, but if you want to focus on freeriding you might find a broader ankle strap offers a bit more response and support. The Nidecker Lucky Clover is a nice freeride binding.
