Hi guys, back again already… :-)

Might be getting a bit ahead of myself here, but looking at the forecast it looks it might be powder-tastic in the alps next week, so my theory of the cambered Ride Antic to sort my carving out might still be valid, but maybe not as much fun next week as conditions might allow….

If I wanted something that might float a bit better, and be less likely to catch an edge when gunning it, what would you guys recommend? Does it come back to the camber/rocker hybrids suggested last time, or all out banana (one of the lads at work had a Lib Tech Skate banana delivered yesterday we were all creaming ourselves)?

Cheers lads.. I can sense the possibility of lashing out another £250-£300 before the week is up with my first board not having touched the snow yet :-)

Get in.. oh well life is for living and money is for spending on toys and shiny things.

Hi Adam,

Good to see you back on the site! Always a pleasure.

If you’re looking for an all mountain / freestyle board to rule the powder, the reverse camber is going to be the best option… you could look at a Lib Tech Pheonix (lynn or Lando) which would definately hold it’s own or K2 Turbo dream.. these boards will rule the pow.

If you’re thinking of a hybrid rocker, for pow I think the Camrock, Amptek school of thought is going to be the best option.. I’m thinking a Nidecker Legacy, Yes 158 or a Rossignol Angus which incidently killed it in the Snowboarder and Transworld magazine board tests… oh and I’ve found one on ebay for £250!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rossignol-Snowboard-ANGUS-Size-158_W0QQitemZ150404086738QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Sporting_Goods_Skiing_Snowboarding_Snowboards_CV?hash=item2304c83bd2

If you want a more specific powder ride, I’d think about a slightly fish board, like a Burton Malolo, Lib Tech snow Mullett, Option Northshore, you get the idea. These boards will rip on the piste and then stick the in the powder and you’re talking about a world of pleasure.. the wider and longer nose will keep you floating no matter how deep the snow is. On down side is they’re a bit more specialist… I have a 164 Rossi Twilight 20mm taper (fish shape) for deep days… always nice having a quiver of boards.

Yeah OK… had a look at those.. all look pretty cool but mostly out of the price range, and maybe looking at intermediate to advanced might be getting way ahead of myself not just a little!

So it looks like camber between the feet with rocker tip and tail is the way to go.. Nidecker might just work but I’d still maybe look at less than the £300 mark if you have any suggestions..

Cheers

Yeah the Rossi Angus I found on Ebay for £250… link above.. or just go into www.ebay.co.uk and type Rossignol Angus into the search. Seller says it’s had a day on snow. It’s this seasons so I wouldn’t be surprised. Perfect for what you’re after. Rossignol Ampteck and Nidecker Camrock are idenical.

That Angus might be a good shout, it looks like they only make the 158 in a Wide, will that make any odds to me with size 8.5 UK shoe?

Ha good spot! Didn’t cross my mind. Well at 26.1 it’s not crazy wide… but I think it might be worth looking for alternatives… I don’t know, If you’re mostly riding powder it shouldn’t be an issue, it’s only an extra .25 of a cm on either edge. I think it’ll be fine but for the sake of an extra bit of dollar it’s probably best getting the right width.

oh….. my…..... god…...

Just ‘popped into’ snow and rock in Chertsey, and very nearly came out with a K2 Turbo Dream.. all except they didn’t have my size in stock…

.. we also talked about the K2 believer, but I figured a zero camber board isn’t ‘different enough’ to my traditional camber Antic….

.... and then we got talking about the ‘gullwing’ of the nitro team, and that seems like a perfectly sensible option.. rocker under foot, slightly set back, with some camber tip and tail. Theoretically this sounds like the perfect combination, so it sits up in the snow, isn’t catchy if you’re flatlining, but will still grip if carving due to the camber at the nose and arse.

I know other boards do this as well (is this like the Lib Tech you mentioned?).. what do we think?

Either way, it’s an ‘in resort’ purchase (if at all..) given we’re off tomorrow night .... but there is 19cm forecast for Sunday night so I can’t help but think something a little more powder oriented might be a tremendous idea..

Cheers

Hi Adam,

Buying gear can be soo infectious! I’m the worst for it, but I’d take the Antic out to Italy. Give it a good thrashing and then make a decision on whether you need another board. It would suck to buy another board that you like riding less or more, in which case one of the boards will become obsolete. If you can, find a shop in Cormayeur and see if you can demo some different rocker boards and maybe a tapered deck (a more specific shape). If you decide to buy out there, at least you’ll be choosing a board that is exactly what you want, even if it does cost a bit more. Personally, for pow I’m completely sold on tapered shapes, watching Cyril Neri dominate any powder terrain on his Hammer Stream 163(fish shape) or Terje on his Burton Malolo just makes pow look soo effortless.
