I have been to Chamonix two years in a row now. Ok. There are indeed some high profile potential in this area. But also some serious overload of people who want the same thing as you do. Powder. Just about 60.000 people per week I would say.

You also need a lot of experience from the place it self.  Outerwise you have to stick to terrain that is more or less the same stuff you have at home.

Or do as I did… skip the guide. Risk your life.  Hike around and find a great spot where no one has been beafore.

Perectly spotted trees. Pow. Pillovs.
Sweet soft love.

Hm, wonder why no one else rides here? Wonder how I can have these spot al by my self in this outherwise overcrowded hell of mouguls?

Well guys. Sound like a dream?

No worries. It´s just getting better. As an elf or something like that a beautifull russian girl, about 18 years showed up, next to my face by dropping a pillow and litterally landing face to face whit me as I was hiking back up for a second or third run. Beeing a bit of a sureallistic scene we started to connect there in the backcountry. Snow up to our waist. Both pumped up whit adrenaline and warm bodies due to the work.  And we did connect well to…..

Soo we did hike and ride the place the whole day. Really magic. She was an good rider to. And of course she made me feel like the big man that had to protect her against the dangers of this evil french mountains. She did not seem to mind a bit of protection either.

Well. Beafore I asked she told me that her father would not like her to spent time whit “boys” ( thank you anyway - even thogh my wife calls me chilidsh from time to time it has been a long time since a 18 year old russian girl whit modell looks called me a boy). Soo al good things comes to an end. She went back to her father. I went back to my hotellroom. Probably the best for both of us. At least in the long run. Russian mob fathers probably don´t go to soft on guys that they find in their douthers bed….

Soo back to the headline. Going for a week. Probably not Chamomix again.  What´s your best bet? If you can include some good areas that allways contains powder and russian girls thats a true bonus. But I really would settle whit the pow.

Thank´s

Buy the way: the reason no one else where in that are was that it´s restricted to skiers (didn´t say anything about snowboarders). Some kind of national park.

There are tons of national parks in the French Alps which is why Heli skiing is forbidden.

As far as backcountry snowboarding goes there are tons of good places to ride that aren’t as crowded or as expensive as Chamonix. Of course a lot of what you can ride depends on who you can ride with… and if any of your riding buddies know the area. It took me two season in Courchevel France to discover how to access all of the good spots and to know when and when not to ride them. Now I’m living in Flachau Austria, I have Zauchensee and Flachauwinkly on my doorstep which have some incredible freeriding but because I don’t know the area, I’m back to learning the resorts again and getting to know the people that rider there.

The Alrberg region of Austria is pretty famous for the quality of the freeriding and the amount of snow they get. Of course resorts like Ishgl and St Anton are super expensive, but there is a lot of freeriding in the nearby resort of Serfaus Fiss Ladis, I rode there last March and the conditions were hard, cold and sunny all week, but there was a lot of potential. The Zillertal Valley has a lot of great spots too, resorts like Hochfugen and Zell am Ziller have some amazing terrain and probably the best pub in the Alps, Scotland Yard. It’s like walking into an English pub in the 1970s!

If you want to ride in the 3 Valleys France on a budget and want to ride woith some good snowboarders who can show you around the mountain check out pleisureholidays.com if you ask nicely and the weather and snow is good they might even take you down Les Avals a famous backcountry route. You shouldn’t have a problem meeting russian girls in Courchevel:)
