Hey,

I’m looking to get a new board sometime in the next week or so.  I’m an intermediate rider and I’ve been riding for about 10 years since I was 12 or 13.  I bought my first board when I was 15 (a Palmer Classic, 157). I got that because I didn’t know anything about boards at the time and the guy at the store said it would be a good beginner board. 7 years later, I’m still riding the same board (I was planning on getting a new one the last few years, but I was at college and didn’t go as much so I just kept riding the Palmer).  Now that I graduated and I’m back home in New England, I’ll be boarding way more and I’m ready to step it up to a board that fits my style.
I’m looking for an all mountain board that is good at high speed and can carve well, but can also handle itself in the park.  I don’t really do anything big, just jibs/rails and smaller kickers and I love hitting jumps on the side of the slope.  I’ve never really tried anything big, never been in the pipe or anything but maybe in the future.

The boards I’ve been looking at the most are the Burton Custom Flying V and the K2 Turbo Dream. Which of these do you think would suit me better?
I’ve also checked out a few others:
Never Summer SL
Lib Tech Skate Banana
Burton Sherlock and Process V-Rocker

I’m 6’1” and about 160lb with an 11(US) boot.
I was thinking a 158W for the Flying V and a 159 for the Turbo Dream.

Sorry this is a lot of information, I just want to be as detailed as possible so I can pick the board that is best for me.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Hey there,
as I’m pretty tired already, I won’t go into detail here but going after what I got from your post, I’d say you’re spot on with the TurboDream.

It won’t hold an edge as well as some camber decks or hybrid rocker/camber boards but it will offer a great potential in the park and for jibbing around the piste, the TurboDream is just right!

Maybe you could add some % to how you are looking forward to spend your time, e.g. 20% piste, 80% park so we can give you some more detailed information.

Cheers, Tobi

It’s actually about the opposite. Around 80% piste and 20% park. Most of my friends ski and usually spend all their time on the piste, so I go with them a lot so I need a board that is good for that but that I can still take in the park when I’m not with them.

In this case, you should definitely check out the NeverSummer Evo / Revolver (wide version of the Evo)!
It has won our king of jib contest (there’s a video review about that as well) and is a great ride all over the mountain but still great in the park. There are hardly any boards that can combine these both worlds as well as the Evo can!

So you don’t think the Custom Flying V would be a good choice? I was originally leaning toward that.  I mostly just like the graphics on that a lot more than the NeverSummer boards, and from what I’ve read it seemed like a board that would fit my style.  Do you think that would be a bad choice for me?

I’m not saying the Flying-V is a bad choice for you, definitely not!
With 80% piste and 20% park it will probably be a pretty good fit. I read that some ppl didn’t really like how the board was behaving but then again most ppl love the new V-rocker on the Custom..
I’m not sure the Custom-V will be perfect to jib around the piste, though. Might be a tad too stiff for that occasion but it won’t disappoint you on kicker jumps, I guess.

A board for 80% piste will probably never have the quality of a park board regarding jibbing. But if you can live with that, I’m sure you’re going to be happy with the Custom-V!

I hear you on the NS graphics…  the logo reminds me of the Polish flag.  That being said the more I research their line-up the more impressed I am with their gear.  It isn’t cheap but neither is Burton at the upper end.

Since you spend a low time in the park I would say the Custom would be bang on…  will rip it up on the slopes and not be out of it’s element in the park.

[NS Evo] is a great ride all over the mountain but still great in the park. There are hardly any boards that can combine these both worlds as well as the Evo can!

What other boards would you put on the same level as the Evo that can handle all over the mountain, including park?

That’ll be the SL. It’s a little bit stiffer than the EVO… which isn’t soft at all. But it’s damper and a bit more directional. In powder it floats really well and on th pistes it rails turns really confidently. It feels like the Custom Flying V on steroids! If you’d like a halfway house between the Custom and the SL I reckon the Lib Tech Travis Rice is a fantastic choice a slightly firmer than medium flex, damper than the Custom but less damp than the SL and you’ve got the mag edges too. Definitely a keeper.

I think I’m going with the Flying V. The 158W. I just like the look of it a lot and I’ve heard good things. Any suggestions for bindings and boots?
Thanks,
Tom
