Hey whats up! Names Ash and im in the market for a new snowboard! I have only done one season but due to my almost pro skateboarding career i took to snowboarding like a fish to water.

I am intermediate i reckon, in new zealand last season i was hitting the big kickers and just about nailing fs 5 tails. and doing bs lip slides and generally jibbing about bla bla (i did shatter my L1 vertebrae on one of the larger jumps but hey pain is progress and its nothing a bit of titanium metal work and a curry couldnt fix!)

im heading back to NZ for the next seasons and am in the market for a new board since im going to take snowboarding alot more serious now.

i want a lib-tech skatebanana. im 6.2ft and am 11.5stone and shoe size us 11/11.5

i currently ride a 158 rome sds cheaptrick. i dont know if i should be buying the 156 or 159 or normal or wide? can any one help as there are no snowbarding ships any where within 200 miles that could help me out with these questions. not sure how wide they are so unsure if i need a wide. also still not too sure on lengths so 156 or 159??

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks!

Ash

Hi Ash,

Stick 5s and back lips after one season, that’s pretty damn good. Shame about the work on your vertabrae though. Tom our head of testing was in NZ last season, he managed 4 days and then spazed a 5 on a biggie and smashed his wrist to smitherines. It sounds to me like the jumps are like concrete out there. I think the 6ft of powder he’s got in Tahoe at the minute is probably making up for it!

So Skate Banana 156W or 159W. Well again you are one of those tall riders who has been cursed (in snowboarding terms) with a lightweight frame and feet to fit your height. So your weight suggests the 156 would be ideal, but you’re quite tall so it has me thinking… hmmm. Well, the Skate banana really is a jib and park board so it’d probably work for you for everything but pow days and big jumps. Have you looked at the McKink 155. It has flat kick tips which means they can keep a longer effective edge 119 cm which is only 1cm shorter than the 159W skate Banana. Having said that, Magnetractions does a pretty good job of keeping you on an edge even on shorter rockered boards.

yeah i think ill be staying off the bigger kickers now, where was your friend at? i was at cardies. good for me i survived untill the last eeks of the season and year the snow (if you can call it that) was terrible this season, was slush and and ice for best part of the season. :(

i think ill be sticking to small kickers and jibbing and abit of off piest aswell so would the 159W banana be my best bet??

despite my lightwieght frame i have alot of power in turns twists etc thanks to skating and training forthe royal marines which is no longer an option thanks to my back so looking into a snowboarding instructors course instead :)

heres some thing to make you cringe

ct scan

1 day post op first time walking after 8 days tied down to a bed haha!

the metal work

this is what happens when you catch a nice fat edge as you headed up the ramp people!! HAHA!

Yep… that’s definitely broken.

Tom, my brother was staying in Queens Towm. I think he was riding at the Remarkables.

No I reckon for little bits of powder you’ll be fine on the 156. It’s not a board for blasting super deep powder and aggressive riding, it’s smooth and easy for freestyling. They say the the 156 will ride like a 159 in powder and with your weight I would think that’s probably enough.

What did you ride last season?

I reckon so. It’ll feel really manoerverable, perfect for rails, jibs and the smaller jumps.

Are you based out in NZ now? Not heading to Europe for the comings season.. or is it doctors orders to take some time out?

No probs. Good luck with the recovery.

And definitely take it easy… you only get one of those backs and they break easy. I’ve just bought a Forcefield back protector and I hardly notice it when I’m riding… a good investment.

Yeah im buying one myself, need a padded one due to no muscle covering my bone where they cut through it. so when i roll over my back i roller over bone and its very uncomfertable so need pads in it.

Ow.

Yeah it’s padded, but not soft padding.

Forcefiled Sport Lite Pro

I can’t even ride without mine now. I just get too paranoid.

bugger is, i landed on my ass when i broke my back due to the compression going through my spine so get some arse padding too!! i have back protector from my motorcycle i will use untill i find a soft one, or maybe wear a padded vest that they sell then the back protector ontopp??? hmmmm so many options!

i swear it is impossible to find a skate banana where the logog on the bottom is black and the rest of the board is colourful! >.<
