I’v just spent all morning doing them in Obertauern, Austria!
I think the best technique to look at is surfing because that’s where it comes from. Below is a video of how to do a cut back on a surfboard… it’s really similar on a snowboard. At least it looks it. I can’t even get up on a surfboard!
Approach a bank of snow, being really light on your feet. We’ll do a fronside slash to get you started pump into the bank transition through your back foot or you’ll end up head first in the pow. Pump through so that as you start to initiate the backside turn you are almost weightless. Now this turn really needs to be snappy, pump both feet through the carve really hard, as you get better you can start to put more weight through the tail and get lots of spray up. Before you loose all of your momentum by getting your weight too far back and cutting back up the fall-line, you nedd to pop your weight back to the centre of the board and initiate a toeside edge. As I said… watch the surfing cutback and you’ll get it.
Cool trick to learn… just watch out for hidden block of ice or rocks under the snow. I found one of those today, which saw me eject head first into said powder bank. I wouldn’t have minded by my girlfriend was laughing her head off… dented pride!
