hey there just after some advice on a set-up (board+bindings) i live in australia and rode the burton whammy bar with malavitas which i found super fun to butter around on but once i started going off the groomed runs and into the deeper and steeper stuff i could barely find an edge to hold onto unlike my old jussi. i am heading to fernie for a season in november so am after something that will be a bit more suited for the pow but still allowing me to hit the ocassional rail and i do enjoy hitting 30-40 footers. im 5’10. 75kg (around 160lb) and have a size u.s 10.5 foot. im not biased towards brands but i do like stepchild, would the jp or simon chamberland be suited? what bindings would u suggest as i hate est so i will be selling mine? thank you so much. also i prefer riding shorter boards. 153-154

Fernie is one of the powder hotspots of Canada…  not the best season last year I heard but still pretty slamming compared to other parts of the country.

Sounds like you’d get the most out of at least two boards, one short board for butters / jibbing and one built for pow.

You probably know what you want for a short board but for the long deck you’d need probably at least a 160 or above out in Fernie…  I’m close to your stats and rode a 158 in waist high powder and was submarining a bit.  In terms of boards something stiff so you can hold a line.

Probably the K2 Turbo Dream at 161…  although it is rockered so maybe 159 you could get away with but not sure.  I rode last season with a 10.5 boot, you can get away with not getting a wide board provided you ride with angles above 10 on your bindings (I did +15, -12 and was fine on a 158 and 155).

Burton Custom X or Flying V is a solid choice too, although you are locked into their bindings.  The Flying V would be better suited for some park stuff too because of it’s profile.

Rich will post more suggestions, are you going to be working at Fernie Alpine Resort?

thanks for the advise, i was trying to avoid buying two boards cos its just more i will have to take bak to australia with me.
we only need one board here in aus, we dont get much pow. usually have to get up early and go searching for it through the little amount of trees we have.

what are a nice binding outside of burton as i have only had burton bindings but wouldnt mind trying something else. yeah i ride +18 -18.

havent got a job lined up yet.. was just going to go there and try to get 2 or 3 days of work a week. not realy fussed wat i do. weather it be on the hill or in town. did you do fernie last year?

I was going to suggest the Custom flying V 156 as my stats are very similar to yours, but if you’re not digging Burton bindings might not be ideal for your.

The Turbo Dream is definitely worth checking out, it’s in the same vein as the Custom and seems to work well in powder and in the park. You could also look at the Lib Tech Travis Rice 157 wihich has Magnetraction and C2-banana. If as you said, you’d like to size down and ride a more freestyle orientated deck that has a bit more guts than the Burton Whammy Bar, I’d suggest looking at the Never Summer Evo 155 or the GNU Danny Kass 155 which both use a similar profile to the Whammy Bar but are just a bit more gutsy, plus the Danny Kass has Magnetraction edges for more grip.

Check out these decks, I’ve got another couple on my mind too, but let me know what you think of those first.

I was in Fernie last session but didn’t get a chance to ride it. There were a ton of Aussies so I’m sure you’ll feel right at home.

Outside of Burton bindings I’ve heard good things on union bindings. I like ride bindings as they are aluminum so they have a great weight to strength ratio.

I wouldn’t fear buying a couple of boards if you’ll be out there a season, you can always get some second hand from the locals.

I would start looking online before you come for living accommodations. KiJiJi is pretty popular in these parts for classified ads.

I completely forgot about bindings!

I’m riding Drake Czars at the minute. They’re super comfy, the highback is responsive but not too stiff and the base is damp enough for freeriding. The only thing that annoys me about them is the fact that the toe strap can be used as a traditional strap or a cap strap, but because there’s no rubber or grip on the fabric it slips off. Should be picking up some Drake SuperSports for my new Rossi Angus in the next month or two. Union Bindings are definitely worth checking the Force has a grea reputation.

I checked out some of next seasons bindings at ISPO in Feb-

For bindings, I really like Rome bindings. I personally use the Targas which is one of the stiffer bindings on their line. In my opinion Rome makes the best toe strap/cap and the bindings are so easy to adjust with almost all of the adjustments are tool-less.

A lot of people are giving rave reviews of the Rome Targas. Rome seem to have really nailed their move into the binding market.
