hey guys! I’m looking for some insight on which models of snowboards to turn to for a better than average all around, all mountain board, with lots of high speed stability, and still very light and flexy. Me and my crew stay out of the parks, and mostly enjoy a combo of super-high speed carving mixed with low-speed high-intensity runs through the glades and moguls. I’ve been snowboarding for 17 years, currently ride a 2004 Burton Custom X. I find it perfect at high speed, but a little stiff and heavy for the low-speed but quick maneuvering. I was thinking that a newer Custom X would be lighter, but probably still as stiff. Any ideas? Cost isn’t an issue, would prefer if it didn’t have zany graphics. Directional is better.

Sorry Crash it was a little joke, because of the title in your post.
I will never do this aigain, sorry.
Hope you get some advice from the pros here on this site!

Custom X is a super board!

If you search a stiff board that is somewhat different from the Custom X you can for ex look at the Capita BSOD.
The Capita BSOD also has a waist width for regular feet. But if you look at the specs , it has a ‘death grip’ in the middle that adds some mm to the waist width. The BSOD is a Hybrid Cambered board.
Is a skull a zany graphic?

The problem is that super light and stable boards tend to be the boards with the firmest flex pattern. Ride Highlife UL, Burton Custom X, Amplid UNW8, Nitro Prolight, Salomon XLT, K2 Protohype… these are all quite stiff.

You might be best dropping the price range a little and looking at boards like the Nitro Team, Amplid Paradigma, Endeavor Hi5, Burton Custom (cambered) which are a little softer but still pretty damn light.

RE: BSOD Death Grip.  This is Capita’s sort of take on Magnetraction and doesn’t add any extra width to binding positions, and the measurements skew the width of the overall board. It’s also not as stiff as the catalogue or their site says it does - as stated in their own product promo video. Capita’s stiffest board is the Totally FK’n Awesome, but that isn’t a ‘quiet’ board in terms of graphics.

I’ll have actual thoughts on the BSOD once mine tastes real snow in January!

If you like the Custom X and want a board thats a little more versatile you should definitely look at the burton Custom (cambered). Also, for 2012 they added squeezebox to the custom x so it is a little softer than it used to be but still extremely responsize. I’m 5’7” 130lbs and ride a 156. I had a 2004 Custom also and loved it and they just keep getting better every year. So ya, go out and demo a Custom and also try out the Never Summer SL and Proto CT. Those are two great boards with a great response, a mid flex, and TONS of pop. They have a combo camber profile so I don’t know if you’re into that. It takes some getting used to. But if you want to stick with a traditional camber profile I would definitely stick with Burton. Some other companies make some sick boards, but Burton still has the best cambered boards out there, IMO.
