Nidecker NDK Random - 2011

Nidecker’s Engineers must be reading Snowboard-Review.com! last year we thought the Random was just too stiff to be enjoyable doing anything other than pointing it straight and hanging on for dear life. This year Nidecker has softened the flex making it a much more manageable snowboard; which should catapult the Nidecker Random straight back into the park rider’s hit list.

Manufacturer's Description:

After two successful years, The Random is again featured in this year’s collection. Minimalistic graphics have been retained, making room for a new board full of colors. What colour is powder?

i picked up this board at all board sports in boulder, co. I am in my 4th season and decided I wanted to get serious about boarding. i did my research and decided i needed something i could advance on. I am currently an all mountain kind of rider i hit everything from the pow to the park. the board handles amazingly well, and if your like me going from a soft flex to a stiff flex well the board is going to ride you more than you ride it.

i am currently running a 158 random, with Solomon dialogues, and bindings I have flow m9’s. first of all this board will get you tired not like a banana board where you can put minimal effort in and spin. every turn and every carve has to have your full input. you must ride as one with this board to get the high performance it offers. now some scenarios to how it handles in different conditions.

in the pow it sinks a little gotta ride 60 or 70% to avoid that.  meaning you have to put more weight on your back foot to keep it from nose diving into deep powder.(only went into waist deep powder with it). other than that it slices through the pow giving you the ability to be the trail blazer in the woods. takes minimal effort with carves in the powder. now onto woods riding.

woods riding with a little powder woods have been a little difficult for me with this board. maybe it is my skill set weight or my input, haven’t figured it out. and by woods riding i am talking about between the trails and dense forest you know the place where only a couple people go. the woods are hard because of the amount of effort it takes. remember full input and you get the performance. also the board performs a little better when riding fast which is a little gut wrenching in the woods. other than that i enjoyed the board in the woods just gotta keep speed and input. now onto moguls.

moguls are fun with the board. like the woods keep the speed up and the input.  the board’s stiffness is great for those trough between the moguls. nice sharp and clean turns. now onto the park as there isn’t much to say about the moguls as it was mostly covered by woods riding.

park now i am not a huge park guy but i do have to say the board is good for the park. I mostly do small kickers. the board because of the twin tip design lets you land switch and perform the same as before. Board has a lot of pop since it is a camber board, i get a lot of air off these small kickers. haven’t done rails or the large kickers yet mostly jump over boxes and what not. not much to say about park besides the twin tip design. now onto the boards specialty for what i have seen. so far.

black runs that aren’t groomed and groomers, these are what this board thrives at.  if you like tearing down the mountain than this board is for you. This board performs so well at high speeds it is just utterly speechless. no wash outs from carving and the edges catch every time. I never get the stone skip effect when i dig an edge. meaning the board grabs and lets go then grabs and lets go. kind of like how you skip a stone across the water. With about -5 inches of fresh powder(all i have ridden this far into the season on the slopes) on the slopes this board fly’s.  you can say “meet me at the lift” to your buddies because you will be blazing down the mountain. fresh groomers are ok little awkward to board on since i like powder better. now onto the final say on the board.

The board likes it if you go fast, you will also like it better if you go faster. the board flexes better if you go fast. and also don’t expect to be feeling all dandy after a full day 8:30-4. you will be tired. I do suggest taking a breather I tried a full day non stop and i just couldn’t get the board to flex when I was that fatigued.
