Palmer Burn - 2011

Palmer say the Burn is soft enough for freestyle… firstly there’s the matter of what kind of freestyle it’s soft enough for. In all honesty the Burn is a beast of a snowboard, take it into the pipe and there’s no doubting the Burn will smoke it in the Andy Finch matter of speaking, this board will go BIG. Then there’s kickers and hips, the burn will dominate these features but don’t expect forgiving takeoffs and landings this is a precision instrument designed to provide pop huge and ride out rutted and moguled landings, but given half a chance it will buck you off like a prize Bull. The Palmer Burn takes no prisoners.

Snowboard Review:

If you have a bigger frame than your average snowboarder, slightly bigger feet and a penchant for firm aggressive snowboards, the Burn might be the board for you.

My first impressions were good; the burn was really light considering I was riding a 160, a vast improvement on previous Palmers which I’ve found to be a bit on the weighty side. The graphics on the Burn are inoffensive with a high gloss wood veneer which should appeal to the usual Palmer fans. Edge hold was good, but nothing to shout home about, the base needed a wax so I’ll reserve judgment on that and the Burn felt stable at speed, perhaps proof that the FLF profile works with Palmers high speed decks.  Down the groomers the firm flex and the extra width worked against quick edge to edge transitions, but if you have around a size 11 US boot you shouldn’t notice too much delay. Palmer have labeled the Burn a top end freestyle board, to work this board through the park you’ll need to be a very confident and aggressive rider hitting big jumps and flying out of pipe walls; jibs, rails and any tables less than around 8m are out of the question, you have to be going fast to get the most out of this board. Pop from the Burn was like 2.5 kilos of TNT but it took a serious amount of energy to work-it, this is not a lazy rider’s snowboard. If you’re looking for a snowboard to ride hard and fast in a variety of snow conditions, hit some powder and get some air out of the pipe the Palmer Burn is worth a look at, if you want to hit the park or hit some jibs off the side of the groomers you should look elsewhere this board is hard work.
