Burton Nug - 2012

The smash hit of last season returns triumphant. You can preach the world over about how the perfect freestyle snowboard length should reach to just below your chin, but when Burton comes along and says take 10cms off that length with the new Nug, well it all goes out the window. If snowboarding for you is about pottering around, throwing 720s off moguls or underflips off cat-tracks then the Nug is a winner. Snowboarders who demand a little more all-mountain performance might want to consider other boards. Of course the Nug would make a nice little addition to anybody’s quiver and is the perfect board for when you’ve got to go out riding with newbies.

What colour is powder?

SYC on January 26, 2012 at 08:32 AM

I am an intermediate snowboarder, previous board was a Burton T6 162cm that i really liked.  I weigh over 200lbs, so I was naturally skeptical about riding the 150cm Burton Restricted Nug.

I tend to be a freerider, do not spend much time at the park, so although this board is reputed to be excellent for this, I have no personal experience with it as such.

However, this board ROCKS as an all mountain board.  Anyone who says that this board can not handle powder has NO IDEA what they are talking about.  Took this baby out on Whistler Blackcomb after a10 inch dump overnight and the board handled it no problem, despite the fact I am probably too heavy for it.  Turns on groomed runs are super easy.  As you would expect from a rocker, edging and carving are not as easy as for a camber board, but actually holding an edge was a lot easier with the Nug than I thought it was going to be.  Only minor flaw with the Nug - holding an edge on icy tracks requires a bit more work, but it can be done.

Overall, I will probably end up using the Nug more than my T6 for now.  Will consider using the T6 on days when I expect to be on packed, groomed runs.
