If it’s AB then it should be easy enough to fix.

Or, alternatively we can look into blocking AB users from the site or leaving it as it is - my preferred option - if people want the content the team are working hard to produce at a loss then viewing some non offensive, non intrusive ads which help cover the cost should be a fair price to pay.

Can you try it now? If it still breaks, can you please post a screenshot of the screen a bit lower down?

Thanks,

Dan

You’re the chief.

Still breaking, requested screenshot attached.

Oh and I just found out that you need to simultaneously allow “googlesyndication.com” in NoScript to fix the layout; so it really seems to be the google ads.

Ah - okay - so it’s not the front page that is breaking?

Fixed.

In future if the site gives you a blank page with ABP on, then you’ll need to switch it off to view, though we’ll probably add a polite message asking users to disable the plugin for this site only.

Cheers

Good job fixing it, I did not encounter any more broken parts.

I hope you didn’t get me wrong about that whole ad thing as I am one who does not refuse to give sth back instead of just taking. It’s just a fact that webpages, which do not work properly with like some of the most popular browser/addon combination, are not really user-friendly in any way.

Asking the visitors to turn ABP/NS off is no problem at all, I myself click the ads regularly, but it’s no good to force them to.

Greetings

Hey Tobi,

No, not at all - I am grateful for your help in fixing it.

My comments very just general. I agree with you on supporting popular plugins, but I disagree with adblockers for all sites. I am happy if people want to block intrusive or annoying ads like popups or flashing “shoot the monkey” from those sites who serve them as the content from those sites is typically of a relative quality, but doing that for all sites is unfair. SBR for example loses money - it costs us more to run per year than it makes and that money comes out of my pocket. So we have made a passive contract with the visitors that come here to view the ads in return for our content.

People seem to think that after they have paid their ISP the internet should be free, but it costs money and time to create the content. Ironically, these are the same people who go to a store and buy a magazine, AND put up with the ads. We are asking for no money, just the ads. Just like free newspapers who can only afford to operate with advertising revenue. The internet is digital and therefore can be manipulated easier to remove the ads (more easily than ripping or cutting ads out of a magazine) but that doesn’t make it right. Nothing in life is free, and using ad blockers on sites like ours is tantamount to stealing.

I have no issue with legitimate reasons for blocking, but I would not feel bad if I blocked users from this site until they switched off blockers for our site - a feature which ABP allows you to do.

Rant over :)

Just wondering if there have ever been Academy board reviews on the site?
Well probably not.. but are you considering adding them, as well?
