Hey everyone,

I went out last night to get fitted for boots and check out boards. I went to play it again sports to check out some used stuff since I’m sort of strapped for cash this year, I told him I was looking for an all-mountain board as I’m a beginner and will be taking lessons and he showed me the World Industries M.A.D. series with Lamar bindings. I will be purchasing this within two weeks, I just wanted to know if it’s a good board to start on and if it’s worth the buy? I like it because it’s flexible, and from the looks of it the board isn’t really beaten up or anything, has some scratches but all it really needs is wax and sharpened edges. I was advised to just ride the board as is until I get better and then when I’m comfortable I can do the waxing and the sharpening if I wanted to.

Here’s an honest answer…

I didn’t even realise that World Industries still existed. It looks as if the brand name has been purchased for a dirt cheap price and now wome low-end factory is pumping-out boards for peanuts. Nobody makes boards with CAP construction anymore but it appears World Industries is. My advice would be to save your pennies and buy some reputable gear. There is so much product in the sale isle of stores right now that you can pick-up a good set-up for next to nothing. Alternatively, find a decent set-up and then look for it second-hand on ebay.

Is there anything you would recommend for a female beginner? My weight is 137 and my height is 4"9, I didn’t really check out the other brands they had cause some of the boards were pretty beaten up. The world industries board is 136cm, and I don’t think they had much of a selection length-wise for me.

Overall I’d be spending $198 for the board/boots which isn’t so bad for me cause I don’t have much to spend, I wouldn’t mind spending a few extra bucks 200-210 for something better.

Is there a reason why boards are not made with CAP construction anymore? Can you tell me more about how a world industries board is a bad choice aside from it being a pretty shitty brand for snowboards? I’m a beginner so I’d like to know more about the technicalities, and what I should be looking for when purchasing a board, I’m not really into brands at the moment, but I do want something of a decent quality, flexible and forgiving.

Thank you for your reply, for the moment I’m going to do some more research

Also, I’m looking for something all-mountain, since I will be taking lessons and going down slopes, however as I get better I’d like to hit half pipes as well.

There’s no chance you’ll be able to find a reasonable set-up for $200… a reasonable set of boots will cost you that much. Also I would advise that you go larger than 139cm, sizing a board is a combination of height and weight… I think between 142 and 144 would be a better fit because it’s between what your height should warrant and what your weight requires.

Your best option is to use our “Board Selecta” and select the following:

All years
Directional shape
Female specific
Low price

Just type the board names in the results into Ebay and see what shows up. I think $350 is a more realistic target for a reasonable set-up. Board ~$200, Bindings~$70 and Boots $80… this is still cutting the budget very tight.

CAP copnstruction is where the boards topsheet is formed over the core to the edge, instead of using a sidewall, it is cheaper to produce and less durable. You can find-out more about it in our snowboard guide
