Checking out the London Freeze

Better late than never! The Snowboard Review crew checked out the London Freeze Ski and Snowboard Festival last weekend, we had a blast.

The World snowboarding calanders craziest backdrop

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know, The London Freeze was sooo last week. Well if the Freeze won’t give us press passes then we’ll get the report up on the site when it suits us.

For those of you who’ve been hidden away in a cupboard for the last month or who don’t live in the fair British Isles, the Freeze is Britain’s only certified FIS snowboarding event. Run on a gnarly 17m table with the world lumpiest landing and steepest run-in, the event attracts some of the world’s best riders drawn by London’s miserable weather, a game crowd and an opportunity to fill their portfolio with some of the craziest snowboarding pictures you’ll ever see.

The Snowboard Review crew attended Saturdays shenanigans, to catch the world class snowboarding. The riding was unbelievable, with huge backside double corks from Gianluca Cavigelli, double backflips being thrown all over the show alongside switch 1260s from the likes of spin to win Ulrik Badertscher. In the end it was Austrian legend and general nice guy Stefan ‘the gimp’ Gimpl who took home the bacon after stomping a super styled frontside1080 and cab 900 which he rode out like he was cruising down a green run, not bad for a man who was celebrating his 30th birthday the very same day.

Following the prize giving, the crew dragged themselves around the various bars consuming gallons of Desperados and Jaegermeister. Snowboardings not the only entertainment on offer for the 15,000 punters at the event, Calvin Harris (whatever floats you boat) did a DJ set and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stoneage fame’s band The Eagles of Death Metal thrilled fans and curious listeners alike with an awesome set of drum smashing and guitar thrashing.

All in an entertaining weekend, worth checking out next year if you get the chance.

A moment of calm mid air before the FIS tours bumpiest run out Mr Gimpl brandishes his oversize winners cheque, just a shame it's in worthless stirling Behold the beast
