The Best Snowboard Technology of 2012

Every year around this time we select a number of innovative technologies that we believe are at the forefront of snowboard design and that really impact the feel and performance of the snowboard they’re applied to. Innovation is something that drives our sport forward and we feel it’s our duty to showcase the biggest contributions of the season.

Jeremy Jones Signs to Karakoram Splitboard Bindings

Jeremy Jones has been a busy man of recent, two years ago he dropped his long time hardware sponsor Rossignol to start Jones Snowboards with Henry Nidecker and then at the start of the summer he announced that he would be dropping Scott optics and Bern helmets to ride for Swedish company POC. Now Jeremy has signed to the new name in splitboard touring bindings, Karakoram. This isn’t a complete surprise as there have been images circulating around the internet of Jeremy’s board featuring the new Karakoram system, in fact most people expected Jeremy to commit to the new system on his line of splitboards for the coming season, however this season Jones boards continue to use the Voile system. This move is a shrewd one by Jeremy, there’s no doubting that the considerably more expensive Karakoram system is more advanced than Voile’s Split Decision set, but this move will certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons; we expect Voile to be working their R&D team to the bone over the next 12 months, which can only be a good thing for splitboarding.

Jeremy looks happy about his new signining, it's either that or this is the best way to get the snow out of your bindings.

Lobster Snowboards website launch and secret board graphic

Just in case you’ve been stranded on a desert island or been hiding under a rock for the past six months, Eiki and Halldor Helgason two of the most annoyingly talented and charismatic individuals in snowboarding recently launched a snowboard brand called Lobster. The lads are launching their new range of boards which feature Bataleon’s Triple Base Technology on their new website this coming week on August 16th at 9:00pm CET (that’s Central European time didn’t you know). The exciting part is that along with launch of the site Lobster will be releasing some “Secret Graphics” boards. You can read all about it in the press release below:

Venture Odin Bags Backcountry Magazine’s Prestigious “Editor’s Choice” Award

A couple of months ago Snowboard-Review posted the exciting news that backcountry snowboard specialists Venture Snowboards had teamed up with Swedish big mountain legend Johan Olofsson to create the Odin. We suspected that the fusion of one of America’s only backcountry dedicated snowboard manufacturers and the man who pointed 1000 meters of vertical in 35 seconds in the memorable TB5 video would be rather good. Now, thanks to Backcountry Magazine the board has been certified good, winning the coveted Editor’s Choice award. Being across the pond and without European distribution it’s a little hard for Snowboard-Review to get hold of Venture boards, but we’re happy to concede that Backcountry Magazine do a good job of reviewing boards so their opinion is as legit as it gets without our seal of approval.

Signal Every Third Thursday - Season 1 Recap

Here at Snowboard-Review.com we’ve loved watching Signal’s Every Third Thursday. There’s nothing that gets us more excited than tinkering with snowboard shapes and materials and if there’s one brand that is experimenting with the most unique and perhaps impractical of these elements it is Signal Snowboards.

2012 Snowboard-Review Test Teaser

Every May the Snowboard-Review.com team head out to the Kaunertal Glacier, in Austria, to ride the following season’s snowboards. Signal Every Third Thursday - Terry Kidwell

This month our favourite snowboard series Signal’s Every Third Thursday takes snowboarding back in time, to the late 80s. About the time when Bill and Ted were getting bodacious on VHS and Nintendo released the NES, there was one man in Snowboarding on a winning streak, Terry Kidwell. In this episode Dave Lee from Signal Snowboards teams up with Terry and legendary skateboard designer Paul Schmitt to recreate Terry’s first pro model. We reckon this episode is the best to date.

Event Check - The Quiksilver Spring Battle 2011

The traveling TTR circus arrived in town two weeks ago for the Quiksilver Spring Battle, a four star slopestyle event run by the Shuttleberg Flachauwinkl and the infamous Absolut Park shaping team. Even though I live in Flachau and the Absolut Park is my local stomping ground I couldn’t watch the competition because of work commitments. Not to worry, this year’s Spring Battle was different; the event was to be judged in-front of a crowd at the after party. I’m not one to miss a good knees-up so I grabbed some beer tokens and headed into town to witness the first ever competition with post competition video judging in-front of an audience.

Enjoy the rest of the season!

While the West Coast of the US and Canada have been enjoying record snowfalls, spring has arrived a little prematurely in Europe. Although there is a little snow forecast for the next week and lowering temperatures it probably wouldn’t be untimely to say us Europeans are now enjoying the last week or two of a fairly dry and frankly bizarre season.

2012 Freestyle Snowboard Preview

Freestyle is where snowboarding is at right now. Sure Jeremy Jones is making Backcountry Split boarding look pretty exciting and there are some pretty radical carving videos from the Japanese circulating around the internet, but there’s nothing like the feeling of stomping a new trick. So it’s no surprise that Freestyle Snowboards are by far the biggest board category, by a country mile. Tobi and I spent a day at ISPO looking through next season’s offering, but by the end of it we’d hardly scratched the surface. Here are our picks of some of next year’s park and jib boards.
